From patagonian forest to an alpine lake surrounded by granite needles

Hiking through andean forests and its biological diversity to get to the beautiful Frey hut on the side of an alpine lake is a must see in Bariloche. The place is famous for it’s climbing and scenery, it offer one of the best climbing on pointy granite spires in the world. We will be lucky enough to spot some climbers on the walls near the hut, tackling difficult rock climbing while the condors fly around them.

This adventure starts near Catedral Ski resort in Bariloche and ends there.

On the first day : The first 5km of the hike goes along a mostly flat trail that has a beautiful view on Gutierrez Lake and Cerro Ventana. Then the trail starts gaining elevation through a rich forest. After gaining almost 1000 meters along 10 km, we will arrive at Frey’s Hut at 1744 meters above sea level. The hut offer accommodation and meals, the hosts are famous for being welcoming.

Second day will be spent going to adjacent valley and coming back to Bariloche in the afternoon through a different way, after doing if the snow condition allow it, following the skyline.

The hike is not technically difficult, but with snow on the trail during the early season.

A two day trip gives time to enjoy the place, jump in the lake, make excursions to the alpine to discover other valleys and, the treat, enjoy a drink during sunset.

    During summer and early fall the trail is usually clear of snow. Winter and early spring imply using snowshoes to get to the hut. Spring tis the time to use crampons and see the ice on the lake melting.
